Sewing Machine Noisy Feed Dogs: Causes and Fixes

Feed dogs aren't supposed to make noise. If yours are scraping, grinding, or thumping, something is rubbing that shouldn't be. I've fixed hundreds of noisy feed dog issues and they almost always fall into four categories. Here's how to diagnose them from the simplest fix to the worst-case scenario.

Feed dogs scraping the needle plate. This is the most common and the easiest to fix. The feed dogs sit slightly below the needle plate when retracted, and rise above it to advance the fabric. If the plate is slightly bent, or the feed dog assembly shifted during shipping, the teeth drag across the underside of the plate. You'll hear a metallic scraping. Remove the needle plate and look for shiny wear marks on the underside — that's your smoking gun. Bend the plate back with your thumbs or file the high spot. Cost: zero.
Dried-out hook race. Your feed dogs mount to a mechanism that pivots in the bottom of the machine. That pivot point is usually a steel pin running in a cast-iron race. Old grease turns to varnish. The result is a gritty, grinding noise every time the dogs move forward and back. Flush the race with sewing machine oil and work it in by hand. If it's bad, use a cleaning solvent first, then relube. Cost: five minutes and a drop of oil.
Worn feed dog gear. Many machines use a nylon or Delrin gear to drive the feed dog mechanism. These wear down, lose teeth, or crack. The noise is a clicking or thumping at a regular interval matching the stitch length. If you see plastic shavings around the gears, that's it. You'll need to replace the gear — order the right part for your model. Cost: part plus labor.
Loose feed dog mounting. The feed dog bar itself can work loose from its mounting bracket. The dogs wobble side to side and smack the needle plate slot walls. Tighten the mounting screw. I've seen screws backed out a full turn that took thirty seconds to fix.
