Sewing Machine Needle Bar Wrong Height: Adjustment Guide

The needle bar controls how far the needle drops below the hook race before it starts coming back up. Get this wrong and nothing else matters. If the needle bar is too high, the needle eye doesn't drop far enough — the hook swings past and misses the thread loop entirely, giving you skipped stitches at best. If the needle bar is too low, the hook blade smacks into the side of the needle. That's the grinding noise you hear, and it'll bend needles, chip the hook, and throw timing out the window anyway.
Here's how to check it on most home machines. Remove the needle plate, bobbin case, and presser foot. Rotate the handwheel until the needle is at its lowest point. Now look at the timing mark on the needle bar — it's usually a line scribed into the metal near the top of the bar, just above the needle clamp. With the needle at bottom dead center, that line should be level with the bottom edge of the needle bar bushing or the bottom of the needle bar guide, depending on your machine. If you see the line above or below where it should be, the needle bar height needs adjusting.
Loosen the needle bar clamp screw — not the needle clamp screw, the one that holds the bar itself. Slide the bar up or down until the timing mark lines up. Retighten and recheck. That's it. On some machines you'll need to also check your hook timing after, because changing the needle bar height shifts the relationship between needle and hook.
