Sewing Machine Jamming Guide

A jammed machine feels like the handwheel won’t turn. Don’t force it.

Remove the needle and presser foot.
Remove the needle plate with a Phillips #0 screwdriver.
Look under the plate. You’ll see thread wrapped around the hook and bobbin case.
Use hemostats to cut and remove the tangled thread.
Remove the bobbin and bobbin case.
Brush lint from the hook race, bobbin area, and feed dog slots.
Apply one drop of Tri-Flow oil to the hook race.
Turn the handwheel by hand. If it turns freely, reassemble.
Replace the needle plate, presser foot, needle. Test on scrap fabric.

Remove the thread jam first. If the handwheel still won’t turn, the problem may be inside the machine.
