Forbidden Sewing Machine Lubricants: Complete List and Damage Guide

After fifteen years on the bench I have seen more seized, gummed-up, and burned-out machines from bad oil than from anything else. If you want your Singer, Brother, Janome, or Bernina to live past its warranty, never put any of these five things in the oil ports.
WD-40. Yes, it's in every toolbox. No, it is not a lubricant. WD-40 is a solvent and water displacer. It will flush whatever factory grease remains out of the bushings and then evaporate within hours. The machine runs smooth for ten minutes and then runs dry until metal-on-metal wear destroys the clearances.
Cooking oil. Vegetable oil, canola, olive oil — all of it. These polymerize as they oxidize. Inside a sewing machine that means a sticky, varnish-like residue that turns rotary hooks into solid blocks. Once that varnish sets, the only fix is a full teardown and ultrasonic cleaning. I charge two hours labor minimum for that job.
3-in-1 oil. The blue bottle is for door hinges and household squeaks, not for high-speed sewing machines. Its viscosity is wrong — too thick for hook assemblies, too thin for gears. It also contains additives that turn tacky over time under the heat of a running machine.
Motor oil. Automotive engine oil has detergents and friction modifiers that leave a film on plastic gears and nylon bushings. That film attracts lint like a magnet. Within a few months you get a paste that jams the feed mechanism.
All-purpose household oil. The label says “lightweight” but these oils are mineral-oil blends with anti-rust additives that do not belong inside precision machinery. They separate at temperature, leaving a watery fraction that runs out and a waxy fraction that hardens in the oil wicks.
