Sewing Machine Needle Systems: 130/705H, 135×17, 15×1 & More

Every sewing machine needs the right needle system. Use the wrong one and your machine won't stitch — or worse, you'll damage the hook timing. This guide covers the common needle systems you'll encounter and how to identify which one your machine needs.

I've been repairing machines for years, and needle-system mix-ups are one of the most frequent calls I get. A customer buys “universal needles” at the craft store and wonders why their vintage Singer clunks. The answer is almost always the shank shape. Let's sort it out.

Needle Systems Explained: 130/705H, 135×17, 15×1, and More

A needle system defines the physical dimensions of a sewing machine needle — the shank diameter, shank shape (flat or round), overall length, and the position of the eye and scarf. Needle systems have standardized names like 130/705H or 135×17. These aren't brand names; they're engineering specifications agreed upon by manufacturers worldwide.

The three major needle manufacturers — Schmetz, Organ, and Groz-Beckert — all use the same system codes. A Schmetz 130/705H will fit the same machines as an Organ 130/705H or a Groz-Beckert 130/705H. The difference is only in quality control and coating options.

130/705H: The Most Common Home Machine Needle System

The 130/705H system — also called HAx1 or just “flat shank” — is the needle system used on nearly every modern home sewing machine. Schmetz catalogs this as 130/705H. Organ calls it HAx1 SP. Groz-Beckert lists it as 130/705H. They're identical.

Key features: the shank has a flat ground on one side, the shank diameter is 2.04 mm, and the overall length is 39.5 mm. The flat side faces to the right (away from the hook) on virtually every machine. Needle sizes range from 60 (very fine) to 120 (heavy denim or canvas).

You'll find 130/705H needles in Brother, Janome, Juki home, Pfaff, Husqvarna Viking, Bernina (most models), and Singer machines made after the 1960s. It's the default. If you walk into any fabric store and grab a pack of universal needles, you're buying 130/705H needles.

For reference, Schmetz part number 130/705H comes in universal (130/705H U), ballpoint/jersey (130/705H J), stretch (130/705H SES), denim (130/705H JEANS), and microtex (130/705H M) variants. Each has a different point geometry for different fabrics.

135×17: The Industrial Standard Needle

The 135×17 system — cross-referenced as DBx1 — is the standard for industrial sewing machines. It has a round shank with no flat side, a 2.04 mm shank diameter, and an overall length of 44.8 mm. That's about 5 mm longer than 130/705H.

Why does length matter? The longer needle positions the eye farther from the needle bar to accommodate the different hook geometry on industrial machines. If you put a 130/705H needle in an industrial machine, the hook will miss the needle scarf entirely.

Groz-Beckert 135×17 needles, Organ DBx1 needles, and Schmetz 135×17 needles are all interchangeable. You'll find these in Juki industrial models, Brother industrial models, Pfaff industrial, and virtually every commercial sewing machine made in the last 50 years.

A common mistake: people buy 135×17 needles thinking they're universal because they see the same shank diameter. If your home machine takes 130/705H, do not force a 135×17 into it. The extra length can cause the needle to hit the hook carrier or the bobbin case timing.

15×1: The Vintage Singer Needle System

The 15×1 system is the needle used by vintage Singer machines from the early 1900s through the 1960s — think Singer 15, 66, 99, 127, 128, 201, and 301 models. This needle has a round shank 2.04 mm in diameter and an overall length of roughly 40.5 mm. It looks similar to a 135×17 but it's shorter.

The tricky part: 15×1 needles are no longer manufactured by Schmetz or Organ in the original form. Modern 15×1 replacements are actually 130/705H needles adapted with a slightly different shank. If you have a true vintage Singer, buy NOS (new old stock) or specialist reproductions.

Organ still lists the 15×1 as part number 15×1 SP. Groz-Beckert discontinued their 15×1 line years ago. If you need them, check with specialty dealers like The Class 15 or Sewing Parts Online. Expect to pay a premium — these are collector items now.

Other Needle Systems You'll Encounter

The 134 system (also called 134RK or DPx5) is used in many industrial bartack machines and some heavy-duty lockstitch machines. It has a 2.04 mm shank and a length of 44 mm with a distinct scarf position. You'll find it in Juki LK-1900 series bartackers and similar machines.

The 2020 system is a heavier needle for thick materials like upholstery and leather. It has a 2.24 mm shank diameter — thicker than standard — so it won't fit machines designed for 2.04 mm needles. Schmetz 2020 needles are cross-referenced as DPx17 by Organ.

The DBx1 system is another name for 135×17 (industrial round shank). You'll see DBx1 used in Organ catalogs. It's the same needle. Don't let the different label confuse you.

The 132×02 system (HAx1 SP for Organ) is a flat-shank needle with a 1.64 mm shank used in some older European machines. It's rare now but shows up in vintage Elna and Pfaff machines. If you have a machine from the 1950s, check the shank diameter before buying.

How to Identify Your Needle System?

Remove the existing needle from your machine. Look at the shank — the top portion that goes into the needle clamp. If one side is flat, you have a flat-shank system (almost certainly 130/705H for a home machine). If it's completely round, you need to measure length.

Measure from the very top of the shank to the bottom of the eye (not the tip). A 130/705H measures about 39.5 mm total. A 135×17 measures about 44.8 mm. A 15×1 measures about 40.5 mm. A digital caliper is your best tool for this — they're cheap and worth owning.

Also check the scarf — that's the indentation above the eye. The scarf position varies between systems. A 130/705H scarf starts roughly 12 mm from the eye. A 135×17 scarf starts about 17 mm from the eye. If you have a known-good needle, compare against it.

Which Brands Use Which System?

Brother home machines (CS-6000i, HC1850, SE1900, all XR series) use 130/705H needles exclusively. Brother industrial machines (DB2-B797, B531) use 135×17 DBx1. Do not mix these up.

Janome all home machines (DC series, HD series, Memory Craft) use 130/705H. Janome's industrial line (the JN series) uses 135×17. The Janome 1600P is a home machine that looks like an industrial — it still takes 130/705H.

Juki home machines (TL series, HZL series) use 130/705H. Juki industrial machines (DDL-8700, DNU-1541) use 135×17. The Juki TL-2010Q is a home straight-stitch machine and uses 130/705H despite its industrial styling.

Singer machines made after 1970 generally use 130/705H. Singer machines made before 1970 — the 15-91, 66, 99, 201, 301, 401, 500 — use 15×1 (vintage) or, in the case of slant-needle models (401, 500), a unique slant-shank needle system that is no longer manufactured. Those slant-needle machines can be converted using an adaptor.

Bernina home machines (all 100-series through 800-series, and the current B series) use 130/705H needles. The Bernina 930 and earlier 800-series use a slightly shorter needle but the 130/705H works with an adaptor. Modern Berninas (B 350 and newer) are standard 130/705H.

Pfaff home machines (Ambition, Creative, Performance series) use 130/705H. Vintage Pfaff machines (130, 230, 360, 260) use the 132×02 system with a 1.64 mm shank. Check your vintage Pfaff carefully before buying needles.

Is Your Machine a Home or Industrial Machine?

This is the first question I ask every caller. Home machines use flat-shank needles (130/705H). Industrial machines use round-shank needles (135×17). There are industrial machines that use flat-shank needles — the Juki TL series is one — but they're the exception, not the rule.

If your machine sits on a table and has a plastic body, it's a home machine. If it's mounted on a metal stand with a servo motor or a clutch motor bolted underneath, it's industrial. There's a gray area with the “semi-industrial” machines like the Juki TL-2010Q — those still use home needles.
