Sewing Machine Needle Clamp Screw Types: Flathead vs Phillips vs Hex

I have pulled more stripped needle clamp screws out of sewing machines than I care to count. The culprit is almost always the same: someone used the wrong screwdriver. Three screw types dominate the market, and knowing which one you have will save you a trip to the repair shop.

Flathead Screw (Slot Screw)

Flathead needle clamp screws feature a single horizontal slot. These are the hallmark of older machines — think vintage Singers from the 1950s and earlier, vintage Kenmore models, and many European machines built before the 1980s.

  • Where you find them: Vintage Singer 15k, 66k, 99k models; early Pfaff and Husqvarna machines; most industrial machines from the mid-20th century.
  • Screwdriver needed: Standard flathead screwdriver sized to fit the slot width. A driver that is too narrow will twist and cam out of the slot.
  • Maintenance tip: Flathead slots wear down over time. If the slot edges are rounded, replace the screw before it strips completely.

The flathead screw is simple and reliable if you treat it right. The slot gives you a lot of torque transfer when the screwdriver fits properly.

Phillips Screw

Phillips head screws are the most common needle clamp fastener on modern home sewing machines. The cross-shaped recess accepts a Phillips driver with a self-centering tip.

  • Where you find them: Brother, Janome, Singer (modern), Baby Lock, and most mid-range home machines sold in the last thirty years.
  • Screwdriver needed: A #1 Phillips driver for most machines. Some larger commercial machines use a #2 Phillips. Never use a #0 — it will cam out and strip the head.
  • Common mistake: Using a flathead screwdriver on a Phillips screw. I see this weekly — someone grabs whatever is handy, and the corner of the flathead chews up the Phillips recess.

Phillips screws are designed to cam out when overtightened, which is both a feature (prevents overtightening damage) and a curse (makes it easy to strip the head on a tight screw).

Hex / Allen Screw

Hex socket screws — often called Allen screws or hex drive — have a hexagonal recess that accepts an Allen key. These are becoming more common on higher-end machines and industrial equipment.

  • Where you find them: Juki industrial machines, Bernina machines (many models), some European brands, and aftermarket needle clamp replacements.
  • Screwdriver needed: Metric Allen key, typically 2 mm or 2.5 mm. Some older European machines use 3 mm. Keep a full set handy.
  • Advantage: Hex sockets are nearly impossible to strip if you use the correct size. The six-sided engagement distributes torque evenly.

I prefer hex screws on my own machines because they handle repeated needle changes without wearing out.

Which Screwdriver You Need

Read this carefully: do not guess the screw type. Look at it. If necessary, wipe the screw head with a rag to see the recess clearly. Then choose:

  2. Screw extractor: A #0 or #1 spiral screw extractor will bite into a stripped Phillips or flathead. Drill a small pilot hole first if needed.
  3. Replace the screw: Once you remove the damaged screw, replace it. Running a stripped screw back in damages the threaded hole in the needle bar, which is a much more expensive repair.
