Sewing Machine Feed Dogs Won’t Raise: Causes and Fix

Your feed dogs won't come up and the machine won't feed fabric. I've fixed this hundreds of times. Nine times out of ten it's something simple you can check in thirty seconds.

Check the Drop Feed Lever First
Look underneath the machine or on the back of the free arm bed. There's a small lever or slide switch labeled with an up-arrow and down-arrow, or a picture of feed dogs. If it's slid to the down position, the feed dogs physically can't rise. Flip it back up. That's the fix in roughly 90% of cases.
Some Brother and Janome models have a push-button drop feed that can get stuck halfway. Push it firmly until it clicks into the up position.
Stuck Lever Mechanism: How to Free It
If the lever is in the up position but the feed dogs still won't rise, the internal linkage might be stuck. Old sewing machines get gummed up with grease that's turned to glue. Run a drop of sewing machine oil into the lever slot and work it back and forth a dozen times. Clean out any gunk that oozes out.
Lint Jam Under the Feed Dogs: Cleaning Guide
Pop off the throat plate (usually two screws). You'll often find a felted mat of lint packed under and around the feed dogs. This can physically prevent the mechanism from lifting. Dig it out with a tweezers and blow out the rest with compressed air. Reinstall the plate and test.
Broken Feed Dog Gear: When to Replace
If the lever is up, the mechanism isn't jammed, and the feed dogs still won't lift, you've got a broken gear. On many modern machines the feed dog cam gear is plastic and will shear a tooth or crack the hub. You'll hear a grinding sound or feel resistance when you turn the handwheel. This is a shop repair — you'll need to replace the gear assembly.
