How to Clean a Sewing Machine?

Cleaning your sewing machine takes 5 minutes and prevents most common problems.

What You Need?

Tool Purpose
Small brush Sweep lint from bobbin area and feed dogs
Curved 8-inch hemostats Remove thread nests without scratching
Tri-Flow synthetic oil Lubricate the hook race
Small screwdriver (Phillips #0) Remove the needle plate
Dry cloth Wipe the bobbin case and hook area

Step-by-Step Cleaning Procedure

  1. Unplug the machine.
  2. Remove the needle and presser foot.
  3. Remove the two screws holding the needle plate. Use a Phillips #0 screwdriver and set the screws in a dish.
  4. Lift out the bobbin and bobbin case.
  5. Use the brush to sweep lint from:

— The bobbin area

— The hook race (the metal ring where the hook rotates)

— The feed dog slots

— Under the needle plate

  1. Wipe the bobbin case with a dry cloth.
  2. Apply one drop of Tri-Flow synthetic oil to the hook race.
  3. Reassemble: needle plate, presser foot, needle.
  4. Test on scrap fabric.

I tell customers: cleaning the bobbin area is the best thing you can do for your machine. I have seen machines that jammed every 10 minutes run perfectly after a 3-minute clean.

What NOT to Do?

Mistake Why

WD-40 as lubricant Leaves residue, gums up
Over-oiling Attracts more lint
Using a toothbrush Too stiff, can damage parts
Skipping the needle plate removal Lint hides underneath
