The other thing I check is the spool cap. When you use a spool cap on a horizontal pin, it should hold the spool in place without squeezing it. If the cap is pressed too tight against the spool, it restricts the thread from feeding freely. The machine has to pull harder, and eventually the thread hits its breaking point. Loosen the cap so the spool can rotate with a slight wobble but not slide off the pin.
