Sewing Machine Bobbin Problems Guide
Bobbin problems show up as thread nests or tension issues. Most of them have simple fixes that take under 5 minutes.
Thread Nesting Under the Fabric
A thread nest under the fabric — a clump of thread on the bottom — is the most common bobbin complaint.
Raise the presser foot all the way. For a deeper look, see the bobbin type identification guide . Pull the thread out of the needle. Rethread from the spool with the foot up. Lower the foot. Pull 6 inches of thread past the needle. Test on scrap fabric.
Nine times out of ten, the nest disappears. The thread sat on top of the tension discs. You threaded with the foot down.
Bobbin Insertion Direction
Different machines have different insertion directions. Getting this wrong causes tension problems.

Bobbin Screw
Mark the screw position before turning. A 1/8 turn makes a visible difference. A full turn can ruin the case.
Cleaning the Bobbin Area
Lint in the bobbin area causes more problems than most people think. The bobbin case has a tension spring. Lint clogs it and causes uneven tension. Clean the bobbin area every 8 hours of sewing.
Remove the needle plate. Lift out the bobbin and case. Use a brush to sweep lint from the bobbin area, hook race, and feed dog slots. Wipe the bobbin case with a dry cloth. Apply one drop of Tri-Flow synthetic oil to the hook race. Reassemble.
