Sewing Machine Oils & Lubricants: What to Use and What NOT to Use
I've opened up sewing machines that looked like they'd been swimming in a deep fryer. I've also opened machines that were bone dry, with metal parts grinding against each other and leaving a fine silver powder inside the casing. Both situations make me sad, and both are completely avoidable. The right oil keeps a sewing machine running smoothly for decades. The wrong oil kills it in months. In fifteen years of repair work, I've seen both outcomes hundreds of times.
In this guide, I'm going to tell you exactly which lubricants are safe to use on your sewing machine, which ones will destroy it, and how to apply each type to the right spots. I'll cover specific brand names, part numbers, and application points by machine type so you can keep your machine running like it did the day it left the factory.
Sewing Machine Oil: The Only Thing You Really Need
Let me start with the most important rule in sewing machine maintenance: use oil specifically formulated for sewing machines. Period. Sewing machine oil is a highly refined, non-detergent mineral oil with a specific viscosity — meaning thickness — that's designed to wick into tiny clearances between metal parts without gumming up over time. The standard viscosity is ISO VG 22, which is roughly equivalent to SAE 5 weight in automotive terms, but don't let that comparison fool you. Automotive oil and sewing machine oil are NOT the same thing.
Safe Oils You Can Trust: Brand Recommendations
Here are the oils I use in my shop and recommend to every customer who asks. I've tested all of these for years, and they all perform well when applied correctly.
Singer Sewing Machine Oil — Part number 507483, available at any big box fabric store for about six dollars for a four-ounce bottle. This is the industry standard. It's the exact same oil that Singer has been selling since the 1920s, refined to modern standards. It's clear, odorless, and it won't stain most fabrics if a drop happens to get on your project. I've used it on Singers from 1909 up to the latest Heavy Duty 4423 models. It works perfectly every time.
Zoom-Spout Oil — This is my personal favorite for day-to-day use, and it's what I keep at every repair station in my shop. The bottle has a long metal spout that bends to reach into tight spaces, which makes it much easier to hit the oiling points on modern machines with cramped housings. Zoom-Spout is ISO VG 22, the exact same viscosity as Singer oil. The only difference is the bottle design. I buy it by the case — twelve four-ounce bottles — for about forty dollars online.
Tri-Flow Clear Synthetic Grease — Not an oil, but worth mentioning because many machines need grease on the gears. Tri-Flow is a PTFE (Teflon) infused synthetic grease that stays put on gear teeth without flinging off at high speed. Use the clear version only. The white lithium version is too thick for sewing machine gears and will cause drag. I use Tri-Flow on the plastic gears of Brother LS series machines, Janome 400 series machines, and the metal worm gears on vintage Singers that have been greased from the factory.
Lily White Sewing Machine Oil — This is a lesser-known brand, but it's been around since 1908 and is still made in the USA. It's slightly thinner than Singer oil — closer to ISO VG 20 — which makes it a better choice for high-speed industrial machines like the Juki DDL-8700 or the Brother S-7200A. The thinner viscosity wicks into needle bar bushings faster at high RPM. You can find it at vacuum cleaner repair shops and some old-fashioned hardware stores.
Accu-Lube ISO VG 22 Bulk Oil — I buy this for my shop oil dispensers. It comes in gallon jugs for about thirty-five dollars and is chemically identical to the name-brand sewing machine oils. I refill Zoom-Spout bottles from this. The key is making sure you're getting ISO VG 22 grade specifically. Accu-Lube makes ISO VG 32 and VG 46 as well, but those are too thick for most household machines.
What NOT to Put on Your Sewing Machine?
Now let's talk about the stuff that will ruin your machine. I've seen every one of these used on sewing machines, and every single one caused damage. Do not use these.
WD-40 — I know, I know. WD-40 is the universal fix-it spray. But it is NOT a lubricant. WD-40 is a water-displacing solvent. It evaporates almost completely within hours, leaving behind virtually no lubrication. People spray WD-40 on a stiff sewing machine, it loosens up temporarily because the solvent dissolves the old, gummed oil, and then the WD-40 evaporates and the machine is bone dry and running metal-on-metal. I've seen machines where someone sprayed WD-40 for months thinking they were lubricating it, and the internal parts wore down so badly that the machine was beyond economical repair. The correct product from the same company is WD-40 Specialist Dry Lube with PTFE, but that's a different product specifically for certain applications — not general sewing machine oil.
3-in-1 Oil — This is the other common mistake I see. 3-in-1 is a light machine oil, but it contains a varnish-forming additive. After about a year, that varnish hardens into a sticky, gummy residue that locks up bearings and bushings. I've pulled apart dozens of machines that were lovingly maintained with 3-in-1, and they're all full of this brown, tacky goo that has to be completely disassembled and cleaned out with solvent. The 3-in-1 company actually makes a specific sewing machine oil too — it comes in a blue bottle — but most people grab the general-purpose red bottle by mistake.
Cooking Oils — Vegetable oil, canola oil, olive oil, coconut oil. I cannot believe I have to say this, but yes, I have seen all of these inside sewing machines. Cooking oils go rancid. They oxidize and turn into a sticky, foul-smelling sludge. If you put olive oil in your sewing machine, in about six months you'll have a machine that smells like an old salad and moves like it's wading through mud. The rancid oil also attracts dust and lint like a magnet, turning the inside of your machine into a disgusting paste that's horrible to clean out. Never, ever put any food-grade oil in a sewing machine.
Motor Oil — Automotive engine oil, whether 5W-30, 10W-40, or anything else, is completely wrong for sewing machines. Motor oil contains detergents, dispersants, and anti-wear additives like ZDDP (zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate) that are designed for internal combustion engines running at hundreds of degrees Fahrenheit. Those additives don't help sewing machines — they leave deposits inside the small clearances of a sewing machine's hook assembly and needle bar bushing. The viscosity is also wrong. Even 0W-20 is thicker than ISO VG 22 sewing machine oil at room temperature, and it doesn't wick into the tight clearances where sewing machines need lubrication.
Graphite Powder — This one catches people because graphite is a dry lubricant that works well on locks and door hinges. But graphite is electrically conductive, and sewing machines use electric motors with brushes and electrical contacts. Graphite dust inside the machine can cause short circuits on the printed circuit board, bridge contacts in the foot pedal speed control, and contaminate the motor commutator. I replaced a main board on a Janome MC6600P that had graphite inside from an overzealous owner, and that board was a four hundred dollar part.
Silicone Spray — I see this used on sewing machines occasionally, and it's a problem because silicone spray migrates everywhere. Once it's on your machine, it gets onto the thread path, and then onto your fabric. Silicone-contaminated fabric won't accept paint or dye properly — you'll get fisheyes and adhesion failures. For quilters who plan to dye their finished quilts, silicone contamination is a disaster. Stick with plain sewing machine oil.
Application Points by Brand and Model
Where you put the oil is just as important as what oil you use. Let me walk you through the critical lubrication points by brand and machine type.
Hook Race Assembly — Every Machine
The hook race — also called the bobbin case race or hook assembly — is the number one lubrication point on any sewing machine. This is the rotating assembly that carries the bobbin case around the needle to form the bottom half of the stitch. On a Singer Heavy Duty 4411, you access it by removing the needle plate and the bobbin case, then wiping out any lint with a small brush. Apply exactly one drop of Singer or Zoom-Spout oil onto the race surface — the polished metal ring that the hook rotates against. Then turn the handwheel a few rotations to work the oil in. On Brother machines like the CS7000X, the hook race is enclosed in a plastic housing that you need to remove by taking out two screws. Apply the oil to the exposed metal race and reassemble.
On Janome machines, the hook race on the DC5100 and MC4000 uses a sintered metal bearing that soaks up oil. Apply two drops directly to the bearing surface, then run the machine at medium speed for about thirty seconds to distribute the oil through the porous bearing material. If you neglect this point, the hook race will develop scoring marks — visible scratches in the polished surface — that cause rough running and eventually thread catching and breaking.
Wicks on Vintage Singers
Older Singer machines — the 15-91, 66, 99, 127, 128, 201, 221 Featherweight, and 401A — use felt wicks to deliver oil from a reservoir to the moving parts. These wicks are strips of felt that run from an oil hole on the top of the machine down to the needle bar, presser bar, and feed mechanism. You need to oil the wicks themselves, not just the moving parts they feed. On a Singer 201-2, there are four oiling points: one under the bed at the hook race, one on top of the arm for the needle bar, one behind the faceplate for the presser bar, and one on the back of the arm for the feed cam.
Put three to four drops of oil into each wick port. Let the machine sit for fifteen minutes so the wicks can absorb the oil and wick it down to the bearings. If the wicks have dried out completely — which happens after decades without oil — they can crack and stop delivering oil. Replacement felt wick strips are available from The Singer Shop (p/n 15105 for the needle bar wick) and are easy to install by removing the faceplate and sliding the old wick out and the new one in.
Gears — Face Only
Gears in sewing machines are usually made of nylon or Delrin plastic in modern machines, or metal in vintage machines. The rule for gears is simple: grease the gear faces, not the whole gear. Apply a small dab of Tri-Flow Clear Synthetic Grease to a tooth tip on the larger gear, then turn the handwheel to distribute it across all the teeth. Do not pack grease into the gear cavity — excess grease will accumulate lint and dust, turning into a grinding paste that wears down the gear teeth.
On Brother LS14 series machines, the lower shaft gear is nylon and runs against a metal worm gear. These nylon gears are notorious for cracking after about ten years, partly because owners over-lubricate them. One dab of grease on the gear face — about the size of a grain of rice — is all you need. On Juki TL series machines, the gear train is metal and uses a tiny amount of grease from the factory. I apply a single drop of oil to the gear shaft bearing, not the gear teeth themselves, because the metal gears in Juki machines are designed to run with minimal lubrication.
Needle Bar Bushing — Drop On
The needle bar moves up and down through a bushing at the bottom of the machine head. This bushing needs regular oiling because the needle bar cycles hundreds of times per minute. On most modern machines, you'll find a small oil hole — sometimes marked with a red dot or an oil can icon — on the top of the machine head, directly above the needle bar. Apply one drop of oil here, then run the machine for thirty seconds at medium speed. On vintage Singers, the oil hole is on top of the arm, usually with a small metal cover that flips open.
If your needle bar starts making a squeaking sound when the machine runs, that's the bushing crying for oil. Apply two drops and work it in by hand-turning the wheel. If the squeaking persists, the bushing is likely worn and needs replacement — that's a more involved repair that I cover in my sewing machine repair guides.
How Often to Oil?
Here's the oiling schedule I recommend to all my customers. For a machine that gets used daily, oil the hook race and needle bar bushing every eight hours of operation. For a weekend hobby machine, oil it once a month. For a machine you haven't used in six months, oil it before you start sewing — the oil will have dried or migrated away from the bearing surfaces during storage.

A common question I get is whether you can over-oil a sewing machine. The answer is yes. Too much oil causes it to drip onto your fabric, stain your project, and attract lint. The rule of thumb is one drop at each oiling point, then run the machine to distribute it. If you see oil pooling, you've used too much. Wipe away the excess with a clean cloth.
