Presser Foot Systems: Low Shank, High Shank, Snap-On & Compatibility
Your sewing machine's presser foot system determines which feet you can use. Buy the wrong shank type and your foot won't make proper contact with the needle plate — the fabric won't feed, or the foot will wobble and cause skipped stitches.
I've done house calls where the customer spent a hundred dollars on specialty feet that didn't fit. The problem isn't the foot — it's the shank. Let's measure yours and sort out what works.
Presser Foot Systems Explained: Low Shank, High Shank, Snap-On, and Slant Shank
The presser foot system refers to the mechanism that attaches the presser foot to the machine's presser bar. The key measurement is the distance from the bottom of the presser bar (where the foot attaches) to the needle plate when the foot is in the down position. That distance defines the shank type.
There are four main systems: low shank, high shank, slant shank, and snap-on. Each has different attachment methods — some use a screw and shank, others use a snap-on bar that lets you swap feet without a screwdriver. Understanding these differences will save you money and frustration.
Low Shank: The Modern Standard Explained
Low shank is the most common presser foot system in the world. The distance from the presser bar mounting screw to the needle plate is about 1/2 inch (12.7 mm). The foot attaches via a screw that threads into the presser bar. The shank itself is the piece between the screw and the foot.
You'll find low shank on Brother home machines (CS-6000i, HC1850, SE1900, all XR and CE series), Juki home machines (TL series, HZL series), Janome home machines (DC series, HD series, Memory Craft), Bernina home machines (B 335 through B 790), and Pfaff home machines (Ambition, Creative, Expression).
Most Singer machines since 1990 use low shank. The Singer Heavy Duty 4423, 4452, 4411, and Quantum Stylist 9960 are all low shank. Vintage Singer machines from before the 1960s are either high shank or slant shank — check before you buy.
Low shank feet are universally interchangeable across brands as long as they share the same attachment style. A Brother low-shank presser foot will fit a Janome low-shank machine. The screw hole spacing and shank thickness are standardized across the industry.
High Shank: Vintage and Industrial Machines
High shank systems measure about 1 inch (25.4 mm) from the mounting screw to the needle plate — roughly double the low shank distance. These were standard on vintage Singer machines (Singer 15-91, 201, 66, 99, 127, 128) and on all industrial sewing machines.
If you have a vintage Singer from the 1920s through the 1960s, you almost certainly need high shank feet. The Singer 15-91 is the most common high shank machine I see. The exception is the Singer 301 and 401 (slant shank) — those are not high shank despite being vintage.
Industrial machines use high shank as well. Juki DDL-8700, Brother DB2-B797, Pfaff 1245 — all high shank. Industrial presser feet are typically larger and heavier than home high shank feet, but the shank height is the same 1 inch. Some industrial feet will fit vintage home machines and vice versa.
High shank feet are less common in stores. You'll need to order online or buy adaptors. A low-shank-to-high-shank adaptor can convert your modern low-shank machine to accept high shank feet, but it adds height to the presser bar and can reduce maximum presser foot lift.
Slant Shank: Singer 401 and 500 Series
The slant shank system was exclusive to Singer's slant-needle machines — the Singer 401A (Slant-O-Matic), 500A (Rocketeer / Futura), 403, 404, and 503 models from the 1950s to 1970s. These machines have the presser bar mounted at an angle, matching the slant needle position.
The slant shank uses a dovetail-style attachment. The foot slides into a slot on the presser bar and is secured with a thumbscrew. The shank height is approximately 3/4 inch (19 mm) — between low and high shank. Standard low or high shank feet will not fit a slant shank machine without an adaptor.
Singer-specific slant shank feet are getting harder to find. You can still get original Singer accessories online. Adaptors exist to convert slant shank to low shank — search for “Singer slant shank adaptor” and you'll find them for about $15. This lets you use modern low-shank feet on your vintage Singer.
One trick I use: if a customer brings in a Singer 401A, I recommend buying a slant-to-low adaptor and a set of generic low-shank snap-on feet. This combination gives you access to every modern foot type — walking foot, Teflon foot, rolled hem foot — without tracking down rare slant shank originals.
Snap-On Presser Foot Systems: Quick-Release Explained
Snap-on (also called snap-in or quick-change) presser feet have become the standard on modern machines. Instead of a screw holding the foot to the shank, you press a lever and the foot clicks off. The shank remains on the machine and the foot snaps onto the shank.
There are two major snap-on standards: the low-shank snap-on system used by most brands (Brother, Janome, newer Singer), and the Bernina-specific snap-on system. Generic low-shank snap-on feet fit Brother, Janome, Juki, Pfaff, and most Singer machines made after 2000.
The key difference between snap-on systems is the shape of the mounting bracket on the back of the foot. Some have a rounded back, some flat. Brother and Janome use the same rounded-back bracket. Singer's newer snap-on feet have a slightly different lip shape but are generally cross-compatible — though not guaranteed.
Bernina uses a proprietary snap-on system. Bernina feet have a unique bracket with a longer shank adapter. You cannot use generic low-shank snap-on feet on a Bernina without a Bernina-specific adaptor. Conversely, Bernina feet won't work on Brother or Janome machines.
How to Measure Your Shank Height?
Raise the presser foot using the presser foot lever. Remove the current foot and any adaptor. Lower the presser bar (without a foot attached) completely. Measure from the bottom of the presser bar (where the foot normally attaches) straight down to the needle plate. Use a ruler or digital caliper.
What are common Presser Foot Types and Their Uses?
A walking foot (also called an even-feed foot) has its own feed dogs that move in sync with the machine's feed dogs. This prevents layers of fabric from shifting. Essential for quilting, sewing leather, and working with slippery fabrics like silk. Low-shank part number: Brother SA107, Janome 837121.
A zipper foot lets you stitch close to the zipper teeth. It has one side that extends forward to guide the zipper. Most machines come with a zipper foot in the box. Replacement: Singer part number 150043 for low shank machines.
A Teflon foot (non-stick foot) has a PTFE coating that glides over sticky materials — vinyl, leather, oilcloth, laminated fabric. The foot won't stick to the material. Generic low-shank Teflon feet cost about $8. I recommend buying a set.
A rolled hem foot creates narrow, double-fold hems on lightweight fabrics. It curls the fabric edge under twice before the needle stitches. Sizes range from 2 mm to 6 mm rolled width. Schmetz-compatible low-shank rolled hem feet are available as part number 730203.
A 1/4 inch quilting foot has a guide line exactly 1/4 inch from the needle. It's used for piecing quilt blocks. Many quilters buy three of these and never switch back. Low-shank version: Janome 4901200.

Adaptors: When You Need One and What Works
If you love the selection of low-shank feet but have a high-shank machine, buy a high-to-low adaptor. It screws into your presser bar and provides a low-shank mounting point. This is the single best $10 investment for a vintage Singer owner. Just remember it reduces your presser foot lift by the adaptor's height.

If you have a slant shank Singer and want modern snap-on feet, get the slant-to-snap adaptor. Singer part number 2588 is the official slant-shank adaptor. Aftermarket versions are available for around $12. The adaptor stays on your presser bar and you snap standard low-shank feet onto it.

If you have a Bernina and want generic feet, use a Bernina-to-low-shank adaptor. These are harder to find but available. Bernina's own feet are expensive but excellent quality. I personally recommend sticking with Bernina feet on Bernina machines — the fit and lift height are precisely matched.
