Automatic Tension System Guide

The auto tension system promises set-it-and-forget-it stitching. No more tweaking the tension dial between fabric changes. But when things go wrong, you need to understand what is happening inside the machine.

How Automatic Tension Works

There are two approaches to automatic tension. They both use sensors, but in different ways.

On the Janome Skyline S9, the fabric thickness sensor is mounted under the presser foot bar. As you lower the foot onto the fabric, the sensor measures the gap. The control board reads the gap and looks up the tension setting in a 50-entry table.

When Auto Tension Goes Wrong

Quick Fix
Before recalibrating, do the 60-second test: raise the presser foot, rethread the machine with foot up, lower foot, then select the fabric preset again. This resets the tension disc position. It fixes 60% of auto tension problems.

Calibrating the Fabric Thickness Sensor

  1. Turn the machine off and let the solenoid reset for 30 seconds.
  2. Turn the machine on with no fabric under the foot.
  3. Navigate to the sensor calibration menu on the machine display.
  4. Select “Sensor Calibration” or “Auto Tension Calibration.”
  5. Lower the presser foot with no fabric. The machine reads the baseline position.
  6. The display should show “Calibration Complete” or a 0.0mm reading.
  7. Test on a scrap of medium cotton. If the stitch looks wrong, run calibration again.
