Second fix: tension. Some machines naturally run tighter at slow speeds because the thread path changes slightly when the machine decelerates. I tell customers to reduce their tension dial by half a number — from 4 to 3.5, for instance — and test on a scrap. That small reduction gives the thread a little more slack at low speed, which compensates for the hesitation.
Third fix: run a scrap piece of fabric behind your work piece as you approach the end. The scrap takes the pucker instead of your garment. After the seam, cut the scrap away. This is a clever trick I picked up from an old tailor in Brooklyn and it works every time.
