Sewing Machine Oil Guide: Best Oil, What NOT to Use, and How to Apply
The right oil keeps your machine running smoothly. The wrong oil gums it up.
Safe Oils: What to Use
| Oil | Type | Safe? |
|---|---|---|
| Tri-Flow synthetic | Synthetic | ✅ Yes — does not gum up |
| Singer sewing machine oil | Mineral | ✅ Yes — made for sewing machines |
| White mineral oil (food grade) | Mineral | ✅ Yes — safe for machine and fabric |
Tri-Flow
I use Tri-Flow synthetic oil on every machine I service. At about $6 a bottle, it lasts for months and stays fluid longer than mineral-based oils.
Oils to Avoid: The Complete List
| Oil | Why It Is Bad |
|---|---|
| WD-40 | Leaves residue that gums up the mechanism |
| 3-in-1 oil | Too thick, causes drag on moving parts |
| Cooking oil (olive, vegetable, canola) | Goes rancid, gums up |
| Motor oil | Too thick and contains additives |
| All-purpose household oil | Usually too thick |
How to Apply Oil?
- Remove the needle plate.
- Turn the handwheel to find the hook race — the metal ring where the hook rotates.
- Apply one drop of oil to the hook race.
- Turn the handwheel by hand a few times to distribute the oil.
- Wipe away any excess with a dry cloth.
One drop. More is not better. Excess oil attracts lint and causes problems.
How Often to Oil?
| Sewing Frequency | Oil Hook Race |
|---|---|
| Daily (4+ hours/week) | Every 2-3 days |
| Weekly (1-3 hours) | After each project |
| Monthly | Before each project |
